Building Community Near and Far: A Conversation with ZGF

“At ZGF, we are challenging ourselves to ensure our projects provide the communities they serve with environments that offer a sense of representation, belonging, and fairness. To that end, we are pleased to share case studies from four projects that are improving access and breaking down barriers in Oregon and other communities in which we work”.

Latino Network’s La Plaza Esperanza
A community center that will provide a protected and welcoming environment for Latino/x residents in Oregon. 

Camp Namanu an exciting expansion project for Oregon’s historic camp to serve more BIPOC and LGBTQ youth.

Africatown Youth Achievement Center
A highly inclusive and student-led process will help increase access to housing and services in Seattle.

DC Central Kitchen’s
Siting and design thinking behind the new headquarters, to be used to redirect food waste and train individuals facing barriers to employment.

The features will be presented by primarily female and diverse ZGF staff members, with an introduction by Sharron van der Meulen, Managing Partner in ZGF’s Portland office.

• As Managing Partner of ZGF’s Portland office, Sharron van der Meulen has worked closely with ZGF clients for over 30 years to articulate their aspirations through a human-centric design approach.

Amanda Hills – Latino Network

• Amanda Hills is a Principal with 17 years of experience in architectural and urban design projects, and as Project Manager for the Latino Network La Plaza Esperanza, she is striving to make a space that celebrates Portland’s Latino/x culture and heritage.

Janel Fausti – Camp Namanu

• Janel Fausti is a Principal and key member of the ZGF Interiors leadership team for over 25 years. She is a devoted backpacker, outdoor adventurer, and world traveler who brings that perspective to the Camp Namanu project.

Kent McCullough – DC Central Kitchen Headquarters, Washington, DC

• Kent McCullough is a Principal Interior Designer and Workplace Strategist who is leading the charge on the DC Central Kitchen project to consolidate its operations and move from the basement of a homeless shelter to a prime location on the Anacostia waterfront.

Christian Shook and Molly Spetalnik – Africatown Youth Achievement Center, Seattle

• Christian Shook, Associate, and Molly Spetalnik, Urban Designer, have been collaborating with Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) and other community partners to program and design the Youth Achievement Center, facilitating a robust community engagement process.
